The ladder a good programme climbs
- Attention on you before any other skill.
- Position cues such as sit, down and stand, with a release word.
- Walking beside you without tension on the lead.
- Distance and duration for stay, added gradually.
- Proofing against doorbells, bikes, food and other dogs.
- Whether recall is practised near cyclists, runners and livestock.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Why does the order matter?
Each skill supports the next. A dog that cannot hold a sit will struggle with a stay.
Will my dog be perfect at the end?
No honest trainer promises that. You should finish with a working set of skills and a plan for keeping them sharp.
Can this lead to a Kennel Club Good Citizen award?
It can. The Good Citizen scheme has Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, and some owners use a programme to prepare. Ask the trainer whether they work towards it.
Is recall near livestock realistic?
It can be built up, but keep a lead on near animals. No honest trainer promises a perfect recall.
