Where dogs walk
Priory Park, St Nicholas Park and the canal towpath at Saltisford

Warwick's medieval centre has narrow pavements, timber-framed buildings and visitors for much of the year. A dog needs to share a narrow pavement with tour groups, pushchairs and wheelchairs, so a short lead and a quick turn away from approaching dogs are the basic skills. Start early in the morning before the shops open.

Priory Park and St Nicholas Park both lie close to the town centre, and each gives a different kind of walk: one with lawns and trees, the other beside the river with water and boats. Ducks, swans and fishing lines mean a firm leave-it is essential. Practise it on a lead by the bank first and add distance slowly.

The canal runs close to the town and the flight of locks nearby is a well-known walking route. Towpaths are narrow, and mooring ropes, bikes and children can all trip up an excited dog. A calm lead position and a "this side" cue for passing walkers and boats make a big difference.

The race meetings bring noise and crowds to the area on some days, and the town sees events through the year. A dog that is relaxed about crowd noise and moving traffic copes well, and one that is not should be given distance and quiet space on those days. Dogs in terraced homes near the centre can bark at passers-by, so teach a quiet cue and block the view if needed.

A simple way to start.

  1. List the moments your dog struggles, such as pavements, visitors, other dogs or being on its own.
  2. Ask each trainer how they teach, whether they work near Warwick and how they cope with a dog that is overwhelmed.
  3. Pick one cue and repeat it daily on your usual walk around Priory Park, St Nicholas Park and the canal towpath at Saltisford for two weeks.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Is it easy to walk a dog in Warwick town centre?

The pavements are narrow and busy at peak times. Start early in the day, keep a short lead and reward calm passing.

How do I stop my dog eating bread thrown for ducks?

Teach a firm leave-it, keep your dog on a lead by the bank and reward it for looking at you instead of the birds.

Is the canal towpath safe for a puppy?

Quiet stretches can be fine, but keep a short lead and stay away from the edge until your puppy is steady and reliable.
