Good questions

Questions, answered.

How much should I budget for dog training?

General estimates run from about £40 to £80 for a private lesson, £120 to £250 for a puppy course and £300 to £800 for an obedience programme. Behaviour plans are around £250 to £700, and board and train stays £1,200 to £2,000 or more.

Can this site connect me with a trainer?

Not at present. There is no form and requests are closed.

Do dogs have to be on a lead near canals?

Not by law everywhere, but towpaths are narrow and shared with cyclists and boats, so a lead or a very close recall is sensible.

Is a rescue dog harder to train?

Not necessarily. Many settle well, but they may need time and patience, and a trainer should hear what you know of their past.

Which methods should I look for?

Reward-based teaching that raises difficulty a step at a time. Avoid anyone who relies on fear or pain, or who promises a set result.

My dog is frightened of fireworks and loud noises. Can that be helped?

Often, yes. Gradual sound training and a safe den can help, and a vet can advise if the fear is severe.

Do I need pet insurance before starting lessons?

Not to take lessons, but trainers should carry their own insurance, and it is worth asking about it.

Who runs this guide?

K9PN does. The Referral Marketing Disclosure explains how.
