Hinckley sits beside the Roman road known as Watling Street, now the A5, and the traffic noise from it is constant. Dogs in houses close to the main road need gradual exposure to engines and lorry brakes. A calm routine at the kerb, a sit at every crossing and a quiet room to retreat to are good habits.
Hollycroft Park is the town's main green space, with grass, paths and wide views across the town. It is a good place to practise polite greetings and a settle on a mat. Some days it is full of children and other dogs, so start in a quiet corner and increase difficulty slowly.
Burbage Common and Woods offers wide-open heath, woodland trails and picnic areas, and is one of the area's best-loved dog walks. It is also a place where recall can be tested hard: rabbits, deer and other dogs are all possible. Use a long line first and build up a whistle recall in short sessions.
The Ashby Canal passes near the town and is a quiet, rural stretch compared with other canals. Towpath etiquette still applies: keep a short lead near boats and bridges, and avoid the edge if your dog tends to leap. Bank-holiday weather brings walkers and boats out in force, so choose a quieter time for training.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I help my dog cope with lorries and traffic noise?
Use gradual exposure at a distance, reward calm behaviour and keep a quiet room at home. Ask your vet if the fear is severe.
Is Burbage Common suitable for off-lead dogs?
It is popular, but check the signs, keep your dog under control and use a long line until recall is reliable.
What should I do on the canal towpath?
Keep a short lead near boats, bridges and the water edge, and teach a calm sit as others pass.
